Southern Illinois

  • Shawnee Hills
  • Alto Pass village
  • Sleeps 7
  • Dogs welcome

A house in the middle of the village. Walk to the wineries, the trail and the bourbon bar — then walk home again.

The back deck, looking out over the village in the morning

The house

A clapboard house on a village lot with a lawn, a carport and a deck along the back — kept for groups who want somewhere to come back to rather than somewhere to sleep. Seven people fit without anyone roughing it: two queen bedrooms, a queen sofa bed in the living room, and a twin. One bathroom between you, which is worth knowing if all seven beds are full. Full kitchen, washer and dryer, fast wifi, and covered parking in a private drive, which is worth more than it sounds on a wine-trail weekend.

Two things that don't show up in a list of amenities. There's a baby grand in the living room, a Lyon & Healy. Beside it sits a record player and a crate of vinyl. More evenings here end around those than around the television, which is also there if you want it.

The deck faces east and is the best place in the house at seven in the morning. Dogs are welcome, and the house is professionally cleaned between every stay.

A base for a wedding weekend

For a village its size, Alto Pass hosts a remarkable number of weddings, and Havisham House — the venue, and the bourbon bar with three hundred whiskeys behind it — is under five minutes on foot. Guests who stay here walk home from the reception rather than arranging a ride.

The house is set up for the morning before, too: full-length mirrors, an iron, a hair dryer, luggage racks in both bedrooms, and closet space for garment bags. One house for the group tends to work out better than four hotel rooms twenty minutes away — in money, and in mornings.

You can walk to it

Alto Vineyards, the oldest winery in Illinois, with a thousand awards and a view straight down the rows. Von Jakob, which is a winery, a brewery and a distillery at once, with German food to go with it. Havisham House. And the Quetil Trail, which starts a few steps from the door.

Around Alto Pass

Eleven award-winning wineries sit within forty miles of the house, most of them two to twelve minutes out — Pomona, Owl Creek, StarView, Blue Sky, Hickory Ridge, Wichmann, Feather Hills — along with a meadery and a run of brewpubs. Scratch, in Ava, is twenty-five minutes away and was named best pizza in America by the New York Times in 2024.

Outdoors, the overlooks at Cliff View Park are three minutes away, Bald Knob Cross five, Pomona Natural Bridge eight, Little Grand Canyon fifteen, Giant City State Park twenty, and Garden of the Gods twenty-five. Rendleman Orchards, three minutes out, has been in one family for a hundred and fifty years and is worth stopping at for the peach smoothies alone. Flamm Orchards, the alpaca ranch over at Makanda, and the u-pick berry farms will fill an afternoon that has children in it.

Carbondale and SIU are twenty-five minutes away, which makes this a quieter base for a campus weekend than anything near campus.
